The island of Bora Bora consists of a main island, surrounded by a group of small islands, with a population of 9,000 people, about 5,000 of whom live in the village of Vaitape. It is the main village in Bora Bora, while the rest live in the villages of Anau and Faanui. Residents on this island use boats as the main means of transportation in addition to bicycles. The official languages of Bora Bora are French and Tahitian. This island was discovered in 1722 AD, and during World War II the United States of America used the island as a line of defense. It established seven huge cannons on its land, and built a number of castles, but it did not witness any kind of clashes, and the American base was closed later.
