?How does honey affect mental health
Studies indicate that honey may be beneficial when used as an antidepressant, anticonvulsant and anti-anxiety agent.
Washington University scientists have proven that eating honey daily reduces the size of cholesterol plaques by 30%, thus preventing the development of atherosclerosis.
Dr. Marianna Gotova, a Russian nutrition expert, explained that honey can have a positive effect in treating psychological diseases such as depression and others.
She says: “The benefits of honey for the body have been known since ancient times, including the possibility of using it to treat psychological illnesses. Firstly, the nutritional components found in honey, including polyphenols, have a positive effect on mental health, and according to one study, honey has a therapeutic effect in cases of depression and other psychological problems.”
Secondly, the protective and soothing properties of honey are known, as polyphenols play an important role in protecting against various neurological disorders, including depression, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.”
According to her, this may be related to honey's anti-stress properties and its ability to raise the level of serotonin in the brain.
“However, despite these encouraging results, more research and clinical studies must be conducted to better understand the mechanisms behind these positive effects on patients’ mental health,” she says.
