Tunisia ends ban on Amazigh names
The Tunisian Ministry of Local Affairs issued a communiqué addressed to the mayors, according to which it decided to terminate the work of the joint circular No. 85 dated December 12, 1965 issued by the Secretary of State for Justice and the Secretary of State for the Interior, which had confiscated the right to choose parents for the names of newborns, especially the Amazigh names from them.
The statement issued by the Minister of Local Affairs, Lotfi Zaitoun, to the mayors stated that the previous policy of prohibiting the selection of the names of newborns has become today "a kind of restriction of freedom." The circular called on mayors to adhere to the provisions of the constitution of January 26, 2014, and the laws and regulations in force in the field of civil status.
