Accomplishments of Ashurbanipal
Accomplishments of Ashurbanipal 1----449
Ashurbanipal was able to read and write cuneiform text. In Nineveh, he collected copies of Babylonian literary texts, including the Creation Epic, hymns, omens, and other traditional and scholarly works, which formed a royal library of 6,000 or more texts. He also built extensively in his capitals, Assyria and Nineveh, and decorated the palace with new-style sculptures depicting his military successes.
Ashurbanipal is also distinguished by his construction processes that show great architectural prowess. During his reign, the study of art was greatly encouraged, and some of his magnificent sculptures represent the pinnacle of Assyrian art. The themes of many of the major sculptures depict the process of hunting, which the king particularly enjoyed.
Ashurbanipal is best known for the library he created, for which he is perhaps considered the greatest known patron of literature in the pre-Christian centuries.
As for the military:
He launched a campaign against Egypt, with the primary goal of defeating Taharqa, king of the Nubians. However, he retreated to Thebes, and the Assyrians contented themselves with restoring the local Assyrian rulers in the delta, capturing the rebel leaders, and receiving tribute from the twenty-two kings of Syro-Bal. Among them is Baal, king of Tyre. And Manasseh, king of Judah. Qoshgebri, king of Edom. Mussoorie, king of Moab. Ceili Bel, King of Gaza; Metinti, king of Ashkelon; Ikausu, king of Akron. Egypt soon intervened again in Palestinian affairs and Ashurbanipal sent a punitive force against Tandaman, Taharqa's successor, who abandoned Memphis, besieged Thebes and captured it.
Ashurbanipal eased the pressure in the north by allying himself with Gyges, king of Lydia. He now turned to punishing Arvad and Tyre, leaving a reinforced garrison at Gezer and then launching an attack on the Arabs of Kedar, Moab, Edom, and northern Arabia, thus effectively isolating the small mountainous state of Judah.
Then he turned to the east and eliminated the Kingdom of Elam once and for all.
