This controversial text was discovered on a 4,000-year-old clay tablet by German-American researcher Hermann Hilbrecht at the beginning of the 20th century.
The oldest disputed Sumerian document gives the names of eight ancient kings who fell from heaven and ruled for nearly two hundred thousand years. According to the story, a group of eight intelligent beings dominated Mesopotamia for 241,200 years before the Great Flood.
The Sumerians were an advanced civilization that appeared about 7,000 years ago between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Mesopotamia, which later became Babylon and which is currently located in Iraq and Syria. The record detailing the list of Sumer's rulers and their reign was the most important relic of ancient Sumer ever discovered in Iraq. This controversial text was discovered on a 4,000-year-old clay tablet by German-American researcher Hermann Hilbrecht at the beginning of the 20th century. At least 18 similar cuneiform tablets were discovered by Helbrecht (ca. 2017-1794 BC). They are not exactly identical, but they have the same information that is believed to have come from a single Sumerian source. More than a dozen copies of the Sumerian king list have been discovered in Babylon, Susa, and Assyria, as well as the royal library at Nineveh from the 7th century BC.
The Sumerian list included the names of several generations of kings who ruled ancient Mesopotamia, as well as the duration and location of their rule. The document also included the events of the Great Flood, myths, stories of Gilgamesh, and stories of the antediluvian kings, in addition to the list.
Before the flood, the Sumerians' list was as follows:
“The king was in Eridu after he descended from heaven.” Olulim became king of Eridu and ruled for 28,800 years. The Algar ruled for 36,000 years. Two kings ruled for 64,800 years. The king then moved to Bad-Tibera after the fall of Eridu.
In-Min-Luana ruled Bad-Tibera for 43,200 years. In-Min-gal-I ruled for 28,800 years. Dumuzid, the shepherd, ruled for 36,000 years. Three kings ruled for 108,000 years. The king then moved to Larag after the fall of Bad-Tibera.
En-Sibad-Ded-Ana Larag ruled for 28,800 years. There was only one king who ruled for 28,800 years. The king then moved to Zambir after the fall of Larag. In-Min-Dur-Ana became king of Zambir and ruled for 21,000 years. There was only one king who ruled for 21,000 years. The king then moved to Shurubag when Zambir fell. Obara-Tutu became king of Shurubag and ruled for 18,600 years. There was only one king who ruled for 18,600 years. They ruled for 241,200 years, with an average of 5 cities and 8 kings. Then the flood came violently.”
?How did the Eight Kings control the world for 241,200 years
There has been much debate about the long reigns of early kings. There were mythical and legendary people on the list such as Etana, Legal-Panda, and Gilgamesh, each of whom ruled for an absurdly long time. Some people believed that they were gods who had a longer lifespan than humans. A list of post-flood systems and governance is also included.
Many thought for a long time that the history of the 8 Sumerian rulers, their impossible rule, the Great Flood, and their reconstruction with another group of rulers after the Flood were just Sumerian interpretations of mythological legends. At the same time, many experts and authors rejected this idea, stressing that the list could not be fake. They started to recognize some of the names on the referee list.
Some researchers have discovered great similarities between the Sumerian king list. For example, the list covered the eight kings who ruled for generations before the Flood, and the eight generations that occurred between Adam and Noah before the Great Flood. Then, after the Flood, life expectancy began to decline.
Historians are still puzzling over the mystery of the Sumerians' list because it contains some strange information about historical events.
