Although it was made from simple materials, it shows high skill in craftsmanship and decoration. The mask is made of linen and plaster, covered with a layer of gold, and decorated with a heavy wig, a lotus flower, and a collar of beads and semi-precious stones. The mask expresses the mummy's personality, religion, and social status.
The Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt is the first dynasty of the New Kingdom of Egypt, and it is the period in which ancient Egypt reached the height of its power. The Eighteenth Dynasty ruled from about 1549/1550 to 1292 BC. This dynasty is also known as the Thutmoseid dynasty, after the four pharaohs who were named Thutmose.
Many of Egypt's most famous pharaohs trace their origin to the 18th Dynasty, among them Tutankhamun, whose tomb was found by Howard Carter in 1922. Other famous pharaohs of this dynasty include; Queen Hatshepsut (ruled from 1479-1458 BC), the longest-reigning Pharaonic queen from an original Egyptian dynasty, King Akhenaten (ruled from 1353-1336 BC) and his great royal wife Nefertiti. The Eighteenth Dynasty is unique among other Egyptian dynasties in that two women ruled Egypt as unique pharaohs: Hatshepsut, considered one of the most innovative rulers of ancient Egypt, and Neferneferu Aten, commonly known as Nefertiti.
