The ban on South Korean pop music, to protect citizens from the "malignant influence" of Western culture, was tightened under a new law adopted by North Korea in 2020, banning "reactionary ideology and culture."
This law calls for people who watch, listen to, or distribute outside entertainment and information programs to be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison and hard labor.

Other "retrograde" practices covered by the law include some South Korean customs, such as brides wearing white dresses, the groom carrying the bride, and wearing sunglasses.
